Modern builder. More than homes.

Nu Stone is a service-disabled veteran-owned builder in Durham, North Carolina. Rental communities we hold for the long term, homes for sale, and public work with our partners — all in one design language: modern, minimalist, honestly built, and priced within reach.

The Name

What “Modern Builder” means

The name carries where we came from — and states, plainly, what we do now.

NU

The hand-drawn, rounded letterforms of the original Nu Stone mark, kept exactly as they were drawn. Old customers in California know this shape on sight.

STONE

Our roots: years of quartz, stone and cabinet work — 600 San Pedro Street in downtown Los Angeles among them. The craft stays; the trade changed.

MODERN BUILDER

Modern is the design language — clean lines, flat planes, honest materials, nothing decorative for its own sake. Builder is the job, without limits: not just houses, but rental communities, for-sale homes and public work.

The design language: one volume, one material accent, nothing extra.

What We Build

Three kinds of work, one standard

01

Affordable rental communities

Our core work. We develop rental communities and hold them — long-term, professionally run housing for working families, including households using Section 8 and project-based vouchers. First up: 28 homes on Berwyn Avenue in Durham.

02

Homes for sale

Detached single-family homes in the same modern minimalist language, sized for real families — three and four bedrooms, real bathrooms, no wasted space. Our sister company Gemstone Design Build leads the for-sale work — six homes on Avondale Drive and a 40-home community planned at Wadsworth — and Nu Stone is part of both from the early stages.

03

Public & partnership projects

As a service-disabled veteran-owned small business, we team with Gemstone Design Build on government and institutional work across North Carolina — the same discipline, applied at civic scale.

The Company

Led by a veteran. Run like it.

Nu Stone LLC is majority-owned and managed by a retired U.S. Navy veteran — a service-disabled veteran-owned small business. The name changed trades over the years, from stone and cabinets in California to building communities in North Carolina. The standard didn’t: show up, build it straight, stand behind it.

Our positioning stays in the work, not the logo: affordable homes, modern design, and a builder who plans to still own the street in twenty years.
